Is there a way to check how many volts a small light bulb is rated at using a multi-meter? I have a number of small bulbs that I use for my model train layout that do no have a rating printed on them. They are mostly 12v,14v, 18v and 24 v bulbs. How can I check their voltage rating so that I don't burn them out or use them where they will get too hot and possibly melt a plastic item.

No sure way with a meter as the current rating of the bulb will affect the resistance, even though the voltage remains constant. I check them using a bench power supply. I start at 1.5V as some are rated that low. I just move the voltage up until I get proper light and I know what voltage and current the bulb draws.

Are we talking amps or voltage as amps would be the more important of the two
