Hi,

Has anyone got any suggestions for replacement lighting for Lemax and other Christmas village buildings?  I would like to get rid of those large white cords that are unsightly, get in the way (namely of the track), and I've run out of outlets to plug them in to.  Running the cords under the table is out of the question, due to the trmporary nature of the layout.  I would really like to route them all to one power source, separate from the train power.

The LEDs sound more like what I'm looking for.  Access to the inside of most buildings is through a hole in the back that the original bulb clamps into, so I'll probably have to figure out a way to thread the bulbs up to the top.  If a single bulb does not uniformly light a multi-story building, I might add additional bulbs.  I also have a few battery powered buildings/items that I also want to convert to outlet power.  I should be able to find info on those conversions online.

Since that article recommends DC power, do you think a DC power pack for HO trains would be sufficient to power the lights?  I have several old train-set type packs that could be put to good use.  The lights could be split between them if the power requirement is too much for just one.

You could use a DC transformer or one simple $3 bridge rectifier and most any AC toy train transformer. Then you have a DC power source.  You could also use individual small rectifiers costing about 50 cents to each building and use an AC source.. LEDs use very little power, maybe 1 watt per building. So 1 transformer would do it unless you have a lot of buildings.
