It's an easy, common mod done by many to replace the red jewel "taillight" on the roof of the O gauge RTR P.E. starter set observation car with an led  but I haven't noticed this mod mentioned for the S gauge P.E. observation car. Ha anyone done this for S gauge? Albeit, considerably smaller than it's O gauge counterpart, how easy is it to remove that red jewel taillight on the PE observation car roof, drill out the "socket" it rests in and put an led in its place? Are there leds small enough to do this mod? If so, what size drill would be used to bore out the socket to fit an led, what size led would be used, and to power it could the wiring  from the led be piggybacked onto the wiring of the cars interior lights?

I'm thinking this added touch would add significantly to the observation car's appearance.

I have done this and it looks great. I pulled out the jeweled light and just drilled very carefully and slowly through the shell. I got the LED from LBR and tapped it into the LED light strip I used in the car. I just sent them an email about the LED needed and they let me know what to order.

Who's LBR and will you please post exactly what size -which LED- and other items they told you to order for this taillight mod? Thanks.

Thanks for providing the link. Here was the response from Dave when I requested the part"#1.6mm X 0.8mm - Pre-wired LED chips, RED, Pair - $7.25"

I believe these were made to run on AC with the diode and resistor.  His response when I asked was "15 - 20 volts AC when wired correctly".  I removed the diode ,kept the resistor, when I connected it to my strip lighting as I had DC available from the converter I built.  I am running it at 11V DC and it has great light output.

I drilled from the bottom directly behind the jewel so I could pop it out from the inside and not damage the body.
