Lion Chief run on AC?

Can the Lionel Polar Express Box Set (Lion Chief engine) run on AC? I'm considering adding accessories and was going to power the track via a 180 Powerhouse with a Lock-on. The Powerhouse provides AC, whereas the set comes with a DC 54 Watt/18V powerpack.

Also - are accessories better run of off AC or DC?
