Lionel 153IR external power supply

Does anyone know whether the Lionel 153IR Controller can be powered by A DC power supply (12VDC)? The manual says external POWER SUPPLY , it doesn't say external TRANSFORMER, which is why I ask. I like to do control circuits in DC where possible.
