I'm looking at a 2332 GG1 on the Bay. One of the two screws on the top of the body is a Phillips head screw. Did Lionel ever use Phillips head screws back then ?

Looks like your screw mounts the horn bracket.
If so, according to the Lionel service manual the screw should be slotted.
But the manual does have errors here and there.
Here is the page: 2332 page 3.
As an aside, it's an uncommon thread: 6-40.
Yes, even the 675 and 2025 types used a Phillips head to mount the motor in front of the cab...

A lot of 2332's have gone through my hands. The motor mount screw and the horn bracket mount screw should be black oxide slotted.
FWIW my 2332 also has a black Phillips head screw in that location. Mine came from the original owner many, many years ago. I have the service manual, too, which shows a slotted flat head recessed screw. The screw on mine is neither slotted nor recessed but a round head Phillips.

I looked at a few 2332's on EBay. Of those that had pictures of the roof, one had a phillips, the rest had slotted.
All flat head screws.
Phillips screws were invented in the early 1930's.
Dan...I have 2 2332's one phillips one slotted....joe
Who knows - anything could have happened and probably did!
The first place I have seen Phillips screws at Lionel is the 227 0-6-0. This was probably about 1939. I have a 2227 tender with a scratch walked across the frame that looks like Lionel was using power screw drivers to install them.
