Old2065:  This gear replacement requires some experience with this type of operation and a hefty investment in the proper tooling.  As mentioned above, you need a wheel puller, and a press.  The parts are the easy part and the least expensive.  When I firs started doing repairs, I was able to pull this off with a wheel puller and a good vise but I also had a great deal of experience in auto mechanics.  Probably best to let a repairman do this work if at all possible.  Otherwise, I wish you the best of luck,  Regards,  Phranzdan 

I looked into why new bearings on a 2343 might need reaming after running into a problem replacing a set of bearings not long ago.
IMHO, the problem arises because the replacement bearings that are generally available today are not exactly the same size as the originals. (Taken from careful measurement and the Lionel factory engineering standards "book")  If you are lucky enough to find some NOS original bearing they will not require reaming.

Look at the documentation provided by Lionel. And look at the documentation provided by Hobby Horse on their bearing replacement tool set. No mention of reaming.
