I've always wondered why the older Lionel 262 never had a clear lightbar with lights on the gate arm? Cost move by Lionel? Or just to keep the price reasonable to buyers back in the day? I'm just curious if anybody knows why. Anybody modify one to match the 252?

Probably a cost issue. One thing I did find out trying to add the lights is that the counterweight on the end of the crossing arm is lighter than a 252 so the arm will not come back up.
I added a light using parts from a 252 crossing gate. Replaced the counterweights with those off of a 252 crossing gate to get the gate to work properly.
