Last time I used this diesel, everything ran without issue. I removed it from my display shelf and put it on the track and addressed it with my Cab2. The diesel cab lights came on with power on the track but after addressing it with the ENG button, there was no Railsounds evident or headlight. Turning the big red dial did not initiate any motion or sound.

Going to the next step, I removed the locomotive shell to inspect wiring and boards. This is very early Legacy with individual boards attached to a motherboard + a Legacy motor drive board which is different from the TMCC version. I removed all the Railsounds boards and re-seated them to no avail. I removed the R4LC receiver board and re-seated it as well-at this point I got Railsounds working again but still no motor driver functions and only one of the two electro-couplers is working. Smoke does not work either.

Wondering if my R4LC had gone caput (original label say "R4LC-S02...), I elected to try another R4LC which was labeled "R4LC-C08-S1". This board was just like it wasn't;t even installed, so I tried another one (from one of my ERR Cruise Commander kits labeled "R4LC-08, LT/ERR). With this board I get intermittent horn and some motion in one direction only at a low speed step.

So my $64 dollar question is - are R4LC radio boards specific to a particular locomotive

I'm thinking of inspecting the motherboard at this point to check for cold solder joints to see if that improves operation; I had to do that to my Lionel Mohawk one time. There does seem to be some corrosion of some sort on the R4LC pin-outs from the MB which makes me suspicious.

Any thoughts from the Legacy experts is appreciated.

Sorry to hear about this engine failure. The discontinuance of these board was discussed in a long thread recently (which was removed). As John says, they're no longer available. Certainly of concern to me, too, with a number of these early Legacy diesels, and several large steam engines in this category as well.

It's not good to hear that nothing in particular seemed to cause the failure. The engine worked fine, then was put on a shelf, and then, when put back on the track, for no apparent reason it wouldn't run. Sounds like Christmas lights, but a lot more serious!
