This might sound dopey, but I can't figure out how the liner is placed in the box to protect the car. When I got this set, the liner was under the car on the bottom of the box. In that position, it afforded no protection for the little blue man. Anyone know the correct configuration? Here is a pic of the mess:

My NIB -75 barrel cars have a different insert with Bob mounted on the arm, my -50s have him in the envelope with this same insert as pictured above in OP.
Never mind, folks. I figured it out- the bent over end was reversed by someone over the years and got "trained" in the wrong direction. The open end goes over Bob and the folding tab lays next to him, with the end piece hooked over the end of the car above the coupler, locking the insert in place with the open end facing up in the box.

This is how my -75 cars are. I couldn't make out that flap in your original pic.
Upon further research of the pile that came with the set, I found the correct envelope with all the correct parts as pictured in the link from Bill King. It has now been re-united with the car in the box on top of the insert. Thanks Bill!
