I contacted the forum a few months ago asking for help with a Lionel Mohawk I bought at an online auction.  It made sounds but it wouldn't move.  I got several helpful suggestions from you guys but no luck.  A friend who was a Lionel service center for many years solved the problem.  The engine is more than 25 years old but my friend said everything looked brand new, except that it was assembled wrong.  A bearing that should have been at the rear of the engine was up front instead.  He also found and re-soldered a few loose wires.  I bought this engine to pull a 5 car set of dark green MTH 18" NYC Pullmans, plus a 2 car add-on set.  I have a grade on my railroad that the Mohawk can manage with the 5 car set, but not with the extra two cars.  It doesn't have traction tires.  I also have a 15-20 year old Williams NYC Hudson that came with a knuckle coupler to be used in double heading.  I'd like to put both engines in "forward only" mode but the Hudson doesn't have that feature.  I'm thinking I could put the Mohawk in forward only, and use the direction button to get the Hudson going forward, but that doesn't seem ideal.

All suggestions welcome. Thanks.

Update:

Rebuilding my railroad is not something I want to do at this stage.

I found the Bullfrog Snot website and watched videos of how to apply it and before and after ability of an engine to pull a long train.  It could be a possibility for me.

ROYBOY said that Frank Timko could regroove the drivers for traction tires.  That's intriguing but sounds like it could cost a fortune.  How do I find him and do you know what it costs?

Unless someone tells me it could damage the engines, I may still try double heading the Mohawk with my Williams Hudson, and hitting the direction button until both engines are going forward.

Thanks, all.
