Just wondering how well these engines run? Do they pull well and can you run them for a long time? Sounds??
Thinking of picking one up from a train club member that has one for sale? tks for any thoughts.

It's a mechanical twin to the 736, with an electronic whistle(it's "OK") and SOS(Sound of Steam - or more accurately Sound Of Static).
So, it will run great once it's been cleaned & lubed, and broken in(a lot of these have been just sitting on shelves or in boxes since the 1980's).
Like all AC Pullmor engines, they won't run as long without maintenance in comparison to DC can motor engines (cleaning the armature plate; replacing brushes).
Since it's identical in design to the postwar 736, it should pull well though. A friend of mine had one pulling 20 Lionel freight cars.
If you don't mind the static chugging and extremely high pitched electronic whistle, this should be a fine engine. I personally have replaced engines with the same 2046 style tender with a newer version with RailSounds.
I have one and it is a nice representation of Lionel's early attempt at sound.
Nice looking set as well.
HOWEVER..........take the tender apart before use and make sure that the foam between the electronic board and the tender metal base has not disintegrated.
Mine had.........just use something new (sticky back foam) to replace the old stuff.
You will short out the board if it comes in contact with the metal base of the tender.
I had to use Q tips and alcohol to clean the old stuff up.
