Decided to take a look at the dual smoke unit in the tender; took forever to get it to drop smoke out of its 6 trackside ports.
Wasn't hard to get the shell off: 2 screws at one end; 2 different size screws at the other end; had to pay attention to the smoke fill under the tool box and move the shell forward and lift and not break the smoke fill tube. Had to remove the sound card to get at the 4 screws that held the PCB to the reservoir.
As the pictures show, the batting was severely burned by my leaning on the water fill button trying to get smoke. The plastic tubes leading to the outlets were also kinked a bit. Replaced the dual batting (2 eight inch lengths from Lionel parts) and primed each side with 65 drops each of Lionel fluid. There was no divider between each chamber. The 2 thermistors were about 1/4 inch away from their resistors - moved them 1/16 inch closer - maybe the batting won't get burned as fast. Un-kinked the plastic tubes.
Worked better; had to wait about 4 minutes for the unit to heat up and push smoke out.
