As a shelter-in-place project, I'm assembling a train for my older brother (looooong story). I'm personalizing it a bit by including a University of Oklahoma boxcar (our alma mater), a reefer car of his favorite beer, etc. One other thing I want to try to include is an automobile car with die-cast versions of the two Ford Mustangs he drove in his younger days (appears I may not get the exact year models, but I can get close).
With all that said, what size are the cars originally offered on the Lionel 6424 automobile flat car? Or should I worry more about finding die cast models to fit the superstructure to the flat car (what are the dimensions of one half of that)? Should I look at 1/43 or 1/48 scale or something else? Finally, would there be an auto flat car that's better suited for what I'm trying to do?
Want to figure out what size cars I'll need before I buy the flat car. The goal is to get two cars that will fit snugly on the flat and not roll around as the train operates (without twist ties or elastic bands to keep them secured).
Thanks for any help and opinions! Stay safe gang!
