The plate looks like it has never been off and is stuck.
I wanted to do a maintenance but can’t budge the plate. What to do.
btw, the loco after some brush and armature polishing runs well.
What would you do? I don’t believe this loco has ever been serviced.
pit was only run at holidays and it comes from the original owner.
I was wondering what one should clean this loco body with, don’t want to disturb the decals.

You can try to pry the plate off with a flat blade screw driver, or loosen the screws to wiggle the motor out, the plate usually comes off.
As for cleaning, just dust off with a white clean cloth, or very lightly clean with dish soap and warm water and a very soft tooth brush, just be mindful of the red and yellow paint and stamped numbers.

Just to add to Mark's suggestion, I am working on some post war stuff as well. I read to use distilled water. I also use Dawn, didn't read to use that, but since it's used on wildlife I guess it's good for Lionel. BTW, I use a very diluted solution of the Dawn. I never clean around the decals either.
Texgeekboy, I Used distilled H20 with light sudsy dawn as well with soft toothbrush.and didn't go near decals.
