Doing research on an old lionel 4-4-2 steam engine that I bought on ebay and am wondering about the tender.  The tender that came with mine has Pennsylvania on the side but I've seen others on ebay with B&O,C&O, Rock Island, and New York Central. Were these engines shipped from the factory with a variety of rail lines on the tender?

It was a bit unusual to include one loco with different tenders, but that's the way they did it. There were unique internal numbers assigned to those pieces, but they weren't really ever published.

Note there are two different lettering variations on the 8304:

White cab number: came with the Rock Island and Baltimore & Ohio

Gold cab number: came with the Pennsylvania and Chesapeake & Ohio

You mention New York Central, but that wasn't ever a factory-issued combination.

I hope this helps.
