IMG_2220IMG_2320I have a Lionel 8632 Steam Engine, purchased used with a guarantee that it worked well when stored about a century ago.  It was the usual dirty, dusty stored in a jumble with many  other pieces of rusty track etc.  A little jerky movement when I put it on my test track.  Disassembled, cleaned, oiled, greased but no change.  Found that the control board, or is it called the electronic e-unit, was hot to touch.  The red and black wires were stuck together where they crossed over each other.  Their coverings were melted but I couldn’t see where there was any exposed wire.  The plastic part holding the control board has a melted section where the black and red wires poke through the control board. When I tried running the motor without the body on it the control board started to smoke.  I cleaned the back side of the control board. So the question is how do I diagnose the problem, can it be salvaged or is it toast?  I tried to find a new/used control board without success.  Is there some other way to make it run?  The little motor runs when attached to a DC transformer

Dallee makes good stuff, but you can buy an entire set including that style of engine for $60, or buy just the engine for $30ish and roll the dice that the electronics will be good.  The sources for rectifiers change often - I'd suggest searching ebay or Amazon - they can be found for just a few bucks each.  Be sure to find something that will fit.  The ability to change direction can easily be added with a DPDT switch, but doing so will require physically throwing the switch to make it reverse.

Mallard, thank you for the advice. You may have the same disease that I do, it’s called the impulse to fix things.  Doesn’t matter what it is.  If it’s not working I want to figure out why and fix it.  Must be the challenge of it.  I’ve been that way since forever.  I don’t really need this unit.  I have way too many steamers and actually have another 8632 running on my track now.  When I purchased this steamer I wanted the whistle tender that came with it however it turned out to have a damaged control board as well so it doesn’t whistle. I had the same issue with my other 8632 tender. When I went to replace that tender’s control board I found that they no longer exist.  I have no knowledge base about modern control boards that can substitute for the original ones.  Advice I‘ve received is usually something to the effect of go to the internet and get this or that and just put it in.  Obviously those giving the advice have experience that I don’t. It was too confusing for me.  All of that said I would like to install an e unit that gives me forward and reverse.  If you have any advice about a fix for the tender I’m all ears
