My Legacy base just stopped charging.  What does Lionel charge to fix these?  Anyone know?  My wife has a battery charger and I thought about just using that.

Merry Christmas!

Larry, you're probably more astute than I am, but I thought mine stopped charging a few months back. GGR made me wise to the fact that there is an on/off switch under it and mine was in the off position.

Larry,  the previous replies are right on and great advice.

When I initially got Legacy (back when it first came out) I used the Legacy base charger for the remote rechargeables that came with it. However, I didn't like that setup for 2 reasons: it took too long to recharge them (maybe the batteries were not the greatest to begin with); and the base got warmer than I liked.  [I recharge a lot of AA batteries for several scanner devices using a LaCrosse BC-1000.]

As an alternative, you can run your Legacy remote using regular AA batteries, BUT before you set the remote in the base, be sure to tape over the charging contact on the top of the base so that you physically / electrically can NOT charge the regular batteries.  I used 2 layers of 3M electrical tape to cover the contact point in the base.

I have been running this way without any problems for years.  The batteries last well over 6 months.

Being out of action at Christmas time is a bummer.

If one of the above suggestions does not fix your setup, you might want to consider doing this.

Enjoy the holidays.

I just remembered too that all the Legacy bases that I know of had to go back to Lionel for a charging update. So that too maybe required even if your base had not quit.

Chuck - a "charging update?"  What is that?   Don't want to jinx it, but I've had mine for 2 years and so far no issues.  Thanks.

I can't remember about the last one I got, but the first two from around 2010 and the charging only base all had to go back. When I had any issues with the handheld, they wanted the base and said to update the charging ckt.

There must have been some cutoff date when manufacturing was updated. Seems like that might have been around three years ago.
