Lionel B60 baggage car coupler problems? | O Gauge Railroading On Line Forum

I just received a brand new Lionel B60 baggage car I ordered in the mail today, and the couplers seem to open on their own when a train is running.

Usually this means a faulty spring, but the spring seem fine to me. when I close the coupler and fiddle around with it myself, I can't seem to get it to open, yet it will at random while a train is running. Note I also do not have any uncoupling tracks on my layout.

Does anyone else have this issue? I'd be pretty disappointed if this is a common problem with a plastic piece of rolling stock Lionel wants to charge $160 for.

Can't speak for the Lionel version, but the original Weaver model (who lionel got the tolling from) had the same problem.

I just used electrical tape to hold it shut

The spring does seem a little weak. Can't seem to hold the armature closed. I drilled out the thumb tack. Less weight for the spring to hold up and the thumb tack can't catch on the rail. The side tab remains so you can still uncouple them by hand.

Yes, I have had this happen. A thin strip of electrical or black "duck" brand duct tape is also how I handle these.

I use tiny black zip ties.

same problem on a previous run in up scheme. I glued mine at a train show in frustration.
