I've seen many renumbered boxes over the years. Many looked just like this. If anyone could make out the number that was blacked out. I can't make it out at all. One must remember that the folks at Lionel were noted for being thrifty. The box & inserts are in poor condition.
Another clue would be how was the numbers blacked out. I doubt if Lionel had Sharpie marker pens back then. I have seen some early Lionel box numbers covered with a sticker and re-numbered but never crossed out like the one photo's show.
Well, these two answers seem to contradict each other. I'm asking because I own a 229 engine that my uncle gave to me in a 1664 box & I've always figured it was the wrong box, but the end flaps are missing so I can't compare it to the photo posted.
