I had this electric substation years ago and it got destroyed when i was taking my layout down to move into storage when we sold our house. We're currently a temporary sotuation while we search for a new house. But I saw on one of these the other day and the price was right.  This was always one of my favorite structures. Very delicate in  some areas, but a really sharp looking building.  I put it together again and cant wait to find it a new home!  I didn't glue the platform to it because i may use as in this picture.  I also didn't put the very delicate lamps above the bay doors for fear of breaking them when i box it up for our hopefully soon move to our new house.

IHC double stall engine house was readily  available, at Standard Hobbies For Men ( I think that was their original name?) an internet discount  hobby supply house in New Jersey back in the day. They were about  $18 to $23 then. There were so many available you could find them at shows for less than $20 ! I remember having to slightly elevate mine a little bit to raise it over the tubular rail I used. Sometimes one will see them at shows. Of course they are more expensive now if you can find them.

PRRMP54, nice photo of modified MTH scaled, by maintenance/ repair shops.

is your photo from the annual Transit show in Brunswick NJ? Or an O scale meet?

Arnold, these kits were used to kit bash many a customized shed. I once used a kit to make back ground  flats on a switching layout. The actual kit takes up a bit of real estate. I remember they were advertised as IHC  BIG engine house. Remember that?

i recall one of my many projects long ago was from an early O scale mag, 0 scale 48/ft.    kitbashing a Lionel single stall engine house into a flat with a paint shop. It came out really well.

TRAIN NUT, I know a lot of  O scalers that utilized this Lionel substation. Also very interesting.

Believe it or not, I still have some of the chopped up pieces of the kit when I utterly failed at kitbashing my gorgeous IHC dual stall engine house into a brick stadium.

I would love to work with someone to successfully kitbash the chopped up pieces into something nice, like a smaller engine house.

Some of us are going to have more talent than others at kitbashing. Maybe there's a learning curve, and it's common to fail initially before having a smashing kitbash success.

Truth is. I never tried kitbashing again after I mangled this beautiful model 25 years ago.

Arnold, stadium walls? Did you sketch it? Don't give up on that idea. How many chopped up kit pieces do you have buried? I might be able to help.  send sketches of what you initially wanted to do if possible. You know my email.

leroof.

Thanks for the offer, Pierre. I have decided that Stadium walls is not a good idea. Although the walls would make the trains disappear, which could be a plus, the walls would also make the ballpark less visible, which is a big negative. I already make the trains disappear by having them leave the basement playroom through a tunnel in the wall.

The ballpark is my best layout creation, and it is and, should be, the centerpiece of the layout with maximum visibility.

The Engine house pieces could be very good material for a skillful kitbasher to turn into a station, factory, house, or smaller engine house as I mentioned before. Something that would be good for me to learn is how to use a Dremel tool to skillfully cut the plastic pieces. Maybe I can learn by doing a Google search or by going into the OGR digital library for a  video and/or article on this subject.
