I am a conventional operator, but still like all the features that command control engines have, so I like to purchase PS2.0/PS3.0/Legacy engines, but I see the Lionel Conventional GP30's are much cheaper than the Legacy equipped ones. Do these units still have the same sounds and lighting effects, minus the Legacy electronics?

While not Lionel, I really really love the NYC Williams GP30 I picked up over the holidays. Note though that I did open it up and wire the motors "in series", which really did help with low speeds. Totally conventional operation, great sounds, great price, just a great addition.
Thanks Murnane for your feedback, but I am interested in the Lionel conventional GP30. Anybody else?
Anybody?
I have a conventional Lionel GP30 that I really like (save for the inexplicably misaligned rear steps). Because I don't have any Legacy engines, I can't compare the two, though I understand the Legacy sound package to be superior to the conventional one.
Murnane, I'd like to hear more about your Williams NYC GP30. I've been eyeing that engine also.

Chris, here is a video of the Legacy version:
Does your conventional version's prime mover sound like this? Also, does it accept a 9 volt battery?
I would seriously like to get one now, but I want some feedback to know exactly what I'm getting!

Hi Chris,
I picked up the Williams NYC GP30 from Nassau Hobby as a replacement to a steam engine I purchased and received which was not working. In fact, this is the first non-steam addition to my collection and I really do love it.
Here is a link to a few pictures, I can take some video of it this weekend if you'd like to see some, I did find this youtube link of someone else running theirs (NOT MY VIDEO):

I did "wire it in series" because it didn't really have much of a slow speed, the thing is super-fast without modifications. Here is a link about this:

Overall I really enjoy it, my first diesel, my first WBB, just a really neat locomotive.
Best...Rich Murnane
Thanks, Rich. An enormously helpful post, and I'm sold; just bought one.

Good engine for conventional (although no cruise, electrocouplers, etc.), as long as you get a road name where the engine is black, IMHO. The colors that WBB uses on other engines are way off correct shade (UP is a milky light yellow, Great Northern orange looks like tomato soup, etc.)
What about the Lionel Conv. GP30s?

Explain what you're asking about.
I want to know what kind of sound they have in relation to the Legacy versions, as well as if they accept a 9 volt battery.
