Will a Lionel Legacy E8/E9 have enough power to pull eight Weaver 20" lighted cars along with the matching non powered A unit with operating smoke?
Does anyone know the drawbar pull rating of a single Lionel E unit Vs. a single MTH E unit?
Has anyone tried one Vs. the other to pull the same consist?

Well, mine certainly does. it pulls the other A unit and an MTH B unit, and twelve 15" alum Lionel cars with no problem.

I recently acquired a 5 car set of Weaver 20" Wabash passenger cars and plan on acquiring another set in the future and adding the the dome and two coaches from the
second set to make an eight car consist.
I am considering pulling the trigger on the Lionel Wabash Legacy E-8's but I am wondering if MTH will catalog a set of Wabash Premier E-8's in the near future since they only made Wabash Alco PA's in PS 1.0? For the money I am with you Marty on having four (MTH) motors over two in the Lionel AA set.
Chas, the Lionel will do as Lee stated. Those Weaver cars roll very well.
I've seen Harry Henning's Lionel Legacy E8 A-A pull 13 passenger cars, including a 2.5% grade without breaking a sweat. I don't think either the Lionel or MTH locomotives will have any problem with 8 weaver cars. Yes, the smoke was running on both of the E8 units.

After watching a few YouTube videos I am leaning towards the Lionel Legacy E-8's as I don't want to wait and hope MTH will do them.

That is good to hear, especially the part about the grade. I have nine Kline 18" passenger cars ready and waiting for Lionel's Rock Island E8's which I have on pre-order
The Lionel E8's are some of the nicest running diesels I've seen lately, and they have great sound as well. While it would be neat for bragging rights to have additional motors, I don't think they're really necessary unless you're really getting crazy with the consist you're pulling.
I really like these units - the SP Sunset Limited came to our depot in Lafayette,La in the 1950's -- what memories !!
John, I have no idea why anyone would think the Lionel E units would not do the job in style. I run my PC often. Back in the day they cruised the Corridor at the bottom of my street.

Speaking as one who owns both Lionel and MTH E & F units, awhile back after running a non scientific test, I found they both can haul a decent amount of MTH die-cast reefers (20) But the MTH units with 4 motors can easily pull far more of them and do it with its 4 motors running less strained. After 15 minutes the shell of my Lionel F-3 became hot, the Lionel unit required additional amps to maintain the same speed while the MTH units just slightly warm to touch cruised around the layout maintaining the same speed with no additional amps.. At the end while they both made it, the MTH A-B-A E6's probably could have run all day while the Lionel F3 appeared to be severally stressed ...

Mine pull 15 gatx cars and don't strain at all.
I have a total of 14 E-8 locomotives. Four are Lionel. I grew up with the real locomotives. I like the Lionel and MTH the same. They are great locomotives. My favorite is my Chicago Northwestern MTH E-8 ABA pulling an 8 car set of Bi Level K-Line cars or the 8 car set of CNW 21 inch streamlined cars.

The Lionel ones should have no issues. Below is a video of mine pulling a 12 car MTH consist. I also have a 7 car Weaver Aluminum Consist with 4 additional Express Box Cars that roll easier than the MTH ones.
After 2 1/2 years I got my answer. One pulls 8 cars just fine and the 2nd one makes it look great back to back.
