I haven't seen that.  Maybe you're in a different part of the country?

I would love to see how some of these Display Layouts are painted and decorated to match the originals.  The track  work and wiring is super basic, but the clean lines under the tracks and for roads is a specific process I might like to recreate someday.

Jon

I’ve attached some random build shots from when I was doing my D-105. In a nutshell…

The method I used for painting was to do an under lying coat of an off white. Lionel usually used off white or gray for their painted road beds. Then you lay track and start marking it up to create masks for additional painting. I just used blue painter’s tape that I measured and cut. This is sort of a low tech approach and quite painstaking but it works. After masking I painted over with my “Lionel green” color and while it is still wet sprinkle on Lionel 990 “grass” for the textured look.

I used the same method to mask off the areas for the base of the accessories and buildings.

That whole process is time consuming and there are different ways to tackle it. I’m happy with my results.

Btw,for those that are interested, I used Behr's Park Picnic for my "Lionel green." There are lots of different color matches out there but I found that this one worked well.

Did you use a color sample or how did you determine the color?

The tips here are amazing, too.  I agree with that whole heartedly!

Exactly. One of the nice things about Home Depot (and probably other places) is I had  them make up small sample sizes for me and I'd go home and test them out on scrap pieces of wood. Easy way to compare colors until you find the one you want.
