Wonder if Lionel will develop their own scale coupler (or partner with Kadee) and offer these cars 3-R or scale in the same catalog? Would keep them in step with Atlas.

Doubt it.  Lionel hasn't offered Kadees or a new scale coupler with the scale compatible American Flyer stuff.

They're also on the new GLa PRR hoppers.

Good catch Dave.  It looks like I have an update to do to the O Scale Freight Car Guide for hoppers. 

The "Great Unification of O Scale" is under way.

I can't wait to actually see one of those PRR N5b Cabin Cars to see how their mounting pads are configured. I don't suppose they will include the proper thickness shim, as MTH does, for correct Kadee mounting height.

Great news!  Too bad that set of Santa Fe box cars aren't going to have them, but it is a move in the right direction.

I'm more interested to see if they are accurate scale cars!

FINALLY!  moving in the right direction. That will save a lot of time. It's only a couple "new" cars, but hopefully in the future, all cars will come with Kadee pads. Now if they would put those pads on the tender, and diesel pilots, I would probably fall over on my face from shock

Possibly, just possibly,,,,,,they could STOP painting that "BLT by Lionel" on the sides of all their beautiful scale pieces!?!

This was the biggest positive news from the entire catalog IMHO.

Now if we can just get them to offer insulated wheel-sets and ultimately offer 2 rail capable engines...

Maybe even paint some correctly for pre-1920??

Well now, THAT may be going just a bit too far, for Lionel.

I mean the reason why 3 rail is what is today is the couplers and wheels (I'm sure we all know why). I just feel its messing with the legacy of # rail toy trains.

I'm happy to see Lionel become easily adaptable to the future of model railroading. 

Would you prefer that automotive companies maintain their legacy by building the same cars they did 50 years ago?

Everything moves forward, or eventually dies.  Lionel should have already learned that lesson.  Rerelease upon rerelease of the same thing only goes so far.

Actually, I'd be even happier if I could get a few unpainted ones so that I could do them up properly for pre-1920 and lettered for the CVRR!

But!  I still need to see one to check it over to confirm it really is truly scale and accurate.

Thanks Ray, I'll remember that. But it still as a matter of principal; Lionel offers an EXPENSIVE scale representation of something, and yet still has that "collector" mentality by putting that stupid "BLT by Lionel" on each side of a truly spectacular piece! If they want to appeal to the collector, why nt nut put it on the underside of the piece in larger lettering?

I would be a hypocrite it i was ridiculing 3-Rail SCALE modelers. I decided to give my own personal opinion to the topic at hand.  

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. However, expressing that particular opinion on this forum is bound to elicit responses that are contrary to what you believe. This shouldn't be a surprise. As Hot Water said, this is the wrong forum for expressing that belief.

If you are into 3 rail scale, your opinion is at odds with your practice. Color me confused.

I don't think this hobby should be one thing or another, it can be many things. Lirr 1555 rest assure Lionel will always offer traditional o gauge stuff; it's in their DNA. The great thing is that they are acknowledging that many of us would acquire their products (**** we already do!)if they could be tailored for scale and 2 rail setups.

I am very excited about this, the idea of owning EASILY convertible scale and 2 rail Lionel products is amazing to me. I run 2 rail 100% and if Lionel starts to fully support 2 rail operation I would jump on the legacy system in a heartbeat. With the new "built to order" system the jump from this to 2 rail engines is not far fetched. Exciting times.        

This sounds like a Mike Reagan idea. I do not use the kadee couplers, but hats of to LIONEL for trying to please those that do. Someone said it above, at least they are moving in the right direction for those that do use those couplers.

This is great news as the scale Kadee couplers make all the difference in the world as far as looks and operation!!  I am really beginning to get fired up about 3-rail scale..
