I have never understood how it operates either. There should be a spring the spins the bronze wheel when the button is pressed. there are several notches that the spring can fit in. When the button is released the wheel spins back. It makes and breaks the track current that trips the 2 position E-unit in the B unit or tender quickly. There are to side contacts on the side that wipe the wheel. The locomotive jerks when this happens. Press once ant it turns the sound on, another press and it turns off. I don't understand why a bronze needs to rotate to make and break the circuit. Actually the diesel horn doesn't sound too bad, considering how primitive it is. The 4-6-2 needs to run near full speed for the whistle to operate.
