Just got this unit and it will not go up or down, all other functions seem to work. I can hear the moter going but no movement. Any tips in taking it apart to see if the gears are slipping or the string is misaligned. I see 4 screws holding the box together anything I should be watching for when I take these screws out? Thanks.

I took mine apart to grease the gears, and I managed to get it back together. If you have any doubts, take pictures during the disassembly.
Those are all plastic gears, and I've heard several stories about the gearbox dying, so that's likely what has happened.

I thought someone mentioned that a company had made metal gears for this, but I couldn't find the reference in a search.
Edit: Found it! Frank Timko is supposed to sell the brass version of the gears, that may be an avenue to investigate.
Do you have contact information for Frank?
Found his web site. Thanks

Susan, can you check your link please.
Susan's link just worked for me. Thank you for posting the link Susan. It's good to see what it looks like before you delve into a project like this. My crane is in the box right now and hasn't been used in a while so I expect to find the dreaded broken gear the next time I put on the layout.

Dave, here it the page http://www.slsprr.net/features/MiJack.htm
From that listing, note the gear under discussion is not available.

NOte, I had a similar gear split witha Dept 56 track. I was able to "Glue" it back using JB weld 5 minute epoxy... better than regular epoxy. The part has yet to fail. So Don't throw out the broken part and attempt to glue back using JB weld 5 minute epoxy
I used the JB Weld too and mine still is together.
