I found these three old track clips, two marked "Ives" and an otherwise identical one which also says "Made in U.S. of America / THE LIONEL CORPORATION NY

The end clips match the spacing of ties on Postwar Lionel track, but they have two tabs (at lower edge in photo) that prevent them from being attached. It looks like they were made to attach to an older type of track and from one side of the track, only.

I would be interested to hear any further history or explanation of these items.

I do know the story about Lionel and American Flyer buying out the bankrupt Ives Company in 1928.

Well that probably explains it. It was made to fit 90 degrees from what I was thinking. The old track must have had shorter different ties for it to fit that way. Lionel quit using the Ives name after 1933, I believe.

Thanks for the info, SteamWolf.

These track clips were used as a placeholder for the Ives trademark. Lionel, LLC neglected to do so and a competitor was able to use the Ives trademark.

Techie is correct, and to expand on the subject, 027 track was originally Ives gauge 0 track. Lionel started their gauge 0 line with the familiar 031 track. When Lionel closed down Ives they started using the 027 track and some of the trains designed for Ives (while under their control) as the 027 starter sets, using the "Winner" name. The Winner went away eventually and just became Lionel 027 or Junior. In order to retain control of the Ives name Lionel had to produce something with Ives on it. As techie pointed out Lionel LLC neglected to make the clips and I believe MTH may have control of the name now.

Thanks guys, that's interesting info. I hadn't realized that O27 started with Ives.

I have this one prewar Lionel car #1690 which was a carry-over from the Ives line. I did repairs on it and adapted it into a battery-power trolley.
