I bought a thomas holiday set Dino set and pet set within the last week. These three sets by lionel all come with remotes, 8 pieces of track, etc. I went ahead and checked them to make sure they worked. I didn't want Christmas morning to be a dud because of faulty remotes transformers or whatever.
They all work perfectly! Can't wait till Christmas. I just wanted to tell of my experience because we do when something's wrong and many have complained of remotes in kid sets.

I've had the same experience with these sort of sets. I have Thomas, Percy, James and Diesel for my grandkids.

Checking the set out before the big day is an EXCELLENT idea. While I've had more successes than failures, a non functioning new train can literally ruin a party. While you are at it, put some batteries in the remote and leave them in there for the big opening so you can get right to the action. I've gifted Thomas, Percy and the Dinosaur train. As far as kids trains go I think the Dinosaur train is the best bang for the buck. Runs well, has a good horn and you can turn off the prime mover sounds which to me are quite harsh. The cars have fixed wheels and are easy for kids to put on the line. I believe the pet set is the same in a different color.
I'm sure your kids will love them and great idea to check them first!
