i thought i heard somewhere that the most recent lionel legacy GS-4 4449 has an alternate whistle? is this true or did i make this up in my head? also if it is true may see a video clip showing the sound and how to change to it? thanks

I seem to recall a lengthy discussion about the whistle being incorrect on the latest Legacy model of the SP GS-4. It is unclear to me why Lionel chose a DIFFERENT steam whistle sound from what was used on the first edition of the Legacy GS-4 models.
At any rate, the SP GS Class locomotives had/have a deep "steamboat" type steam whistle, and also a large, forward facing air horn (which Lionel DID get correct). For what it's worth, SP Engineers rarely ever used the steam whistle anyway, while the big air horn was the order of the day for all warnings.
So, in my opinion, forget the "incorrect steam whistle" sound and use the air horn, like the prototype did, back in the steam days.
Correct, the last Legacy GS4 Daylight and AFT have the wrong steam whistle. The previous Legacy version with cab #4436 has the correct whistle.
Please help the uneducated: Is there a way to change the incorrect whistle to the correct whistle on these two locos?
Without starting a prolonged discussion, if I one day wanted the most accurate Legacy GS-4 or 4449, which one is my best option? Or do I go straight to Third Rail?

I don't know if Lionel has even offered a "correct" whistle sound chip for the latest Legacy SP GS-4 models.

Well, the most accurate DETAIL wise from Lionel, would be the latest Legacy version, but it does have the incorrect whistle.
Or do I go straight to Third Rail?
That's EXACTLY what I did, as I wanted the black, mid 1950s version anyway. It does have the correct whistle plus an air horn!
I have the latest Lionel Legacy and the 3rd Rail. They both have their pros and cons. Honestly if you dont have the GGD cars, the 3rd Rail engine is noticeably different color than Lionel. I like my Lionel version better in general.
When you load the Lionel Legacy GS-4 into your CAB 2, you get a dedicated key on the touchscreen for the air horn.

thanks guys, btw which GS4 is
1. more accurate?
2. Better Bang for buck (i.e compatability, features, etc.)
3. Better sound options
PS1, PS2, PS3, Legacy, or third rail?

In my opinion, it is obviously the Sunset/3rd Rail model, and that is why I purchased THAT one.
I've ran the cab #4436 and let me tell you, best sounds in a lionel engine ever in my opinion, especially the whistle. I would very much recommend that one, it may not have the cab #4449 but it's still the best GS-4 sound wise in existence imo.

I tend to agree with the statement about the sound. I have at least 4 MTH GS-4 models (some in Daylight colors and two black ones), all of which are pretty accurate in details & sound, for how SP 4449 is today. I also have that early Lionel Legacy model ( cab #4436), and although some of the details are a bit "off" (the main rod is undersize since Lionel apparently used the running gear from the GS-2 model), but the sounds are truly top notch. Still, I prefer my Sunset/3rd Rail model GS-4 in black, with the skirts removed, which is the most accurate representation of Southern Pacific 4-8-4s in the early thru mid 1950s, and it does have the correct whistle & air horn.
Has anyone tried to order some running gear for the newer GS-4 and then tried to see if it will fit/work on the older GS-4 (#4436)?
And correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the 4436 come with loco specific ID/crew talk while the new 4449s do not?

You are correct about the crewtalk, it’s cab # specific on the #4436
Can I please see a video showing the sunset third rail daylight with a whistle demonstration. It's mainly the whistle that will make or break the deal for me

Sorry but, I don't have the ability to do videos. The Sunset/3rd Rail model comes with ERR and the same "sound chip" used in the first Lionel Legacy GS-4 model. Naturally, since it is "only" TMCC Rail Sounds 5 (?), it doesn't have all that other Legacy stuff, which I don't care about anyway.
