Lionel Numbering System?

I thought Lionel numbers always started with a 6 for O gauge (6-12345) but recently I've run across a couple of sets that started with a 7 (7-12345). Anybody know the why's and wherefore's? Just trying to satisfy my curiosity, you know.

7-xxxxx numbers are usually items made for mass market retailers. Like the original Nascar sets, Large Scale (battery) trains, uncataloged sets for Target, Walmart etc.
