Lionel Polar express circuit board problem

I have a Lionel polar express 1225. I bought it on Ebay knowing that it didn't run. I have others like it so I wanted to learn about what goes wrong on these engines with a circuit board running them. Anybody?? My question is, what goes wrong on these engines the most or what goes out first which probably be called a weak link. I am learning how to use my meter. I have an Etek multimeter number10709. Can some of you guys out there who know all about these things help me out. Thanks, RailHammerjohn
