Hey guys,

I am planning to buy a set of Lionel tinplate cars in the 800 series, being in the #813 to #817 range.   But, the dome tank car is missing.

Yesterday, at the local flea market, I found a great condition Lionel 1680 Shell dome car for $18.00.

Was the 1650 car part of a series?  Or was it a stand-alone creation?

What is the "take" on mixing and matching cars from different series?    The 1680 car has the same 4 wheel trucks and same latch/hook couplers as the#800 series cars.

Thanks,

Mannyrock

The 1680 tank car was one of the 1600 series sheet metal lithographed cars.  These were the series below the 600/2600 series cars.  Originally Ives cars, they were taken over by Lionel.

1677 Gondola

1678 Stock Car (Ives only, not made by Lionel)

1679 Box Car

1680 Tank Car (Shell or Sunoco)

1682 Caboose

These cars were upgraded before World War II with automatic couplers, so a 16xx car became a 26xx car.
