I had no idea what a cabbage car was.  Now I know.  Is this an engine turned into a baggage car?   Hence:   cab - baggage or (cab) (bage)?  

It looks as if this is an expensive way to get a baggage car.  Did it control the train in push pull mode or is it just a baggage car?  I don't believe we had any of these on the West Coast.

The "Cabbage" was Amtrak's solution to F40PHs that were scheduled for retirement.  The prime movers were removed to make a baggage compartment and they also serve as cab control cars.  They can be found all over the system but they are most common on west coast trains so the train set doesn't need to turned.

With Lionel F40 arrival right around around the corner, I'm curious to ask what are you gonna pull with your F40 once you get it? I'm gonna use my Atlas o horizons and my Mth Northeast Direct Amfleets. 

The "cabbage" is more than a baggage car. It's equipped with the locomotive control to drive the train and give better protection to the engineer and the rest of the train than a cab control car.
