Mea culpa before posting here I ran a decent search on it and came up "nada" so I'm going to ask the wise ones why (if anyone knows) this #1110 diecast Columbia has this rather odd hole above the centered smokebox headlight? this is not common to all of this model/casting number, appearing in multiple listings both with and without it. Looks weird though right?

I collect post-war pre-MPC diecast Lionel O27 steamers and wanted another diecast 2-4-2 to keep my original albeit worn-out #1036 company. I'm thinking that I might have to shop for an intact smokebox version for it. Something missing here?

Anybody know about these?

It is for the "wind assisted" smoke found on the 6110 Scout cataloged in 1950.
Left-over shells with the hole were used as 1110 shells while new "1951" shells (with the hole filled) were cast.

Instead of a puffer, the hole was there to allow air from the moving train to push smoke up the stack.

Looks just like my new-to-me for Christmas way back when #1110 - of course they don't have a smoke unit but that is the way they were shipped.

I never noticed that variation. Guess I've just ignored the little 2-4-2 while I searched out bigger prey in the postwar world!
