My SD70 has been running strange for the last few runs.  It runs fine for a few minutes then stops.  If I spin the red knob the engine sounds rev up and down, but engine does not move.  If I let it set for a little while it works again for a few minutes than stops.  I held my hand over it to check the signal, but it has no effect.

Could it be a bad radio board?

Try removing the locomotive from the track to eliminate all power, turn the Odyssey switch off, put it back on the track and see if the problem is resolved.  If so, you can then turn the Odyssey switch back on after you have powered off the locomotive.  If that does not resolve the problem, repeat the first three steps and readdress the locomotive before turning the Odyssey switch back on.

What, me worry?

I will sadly say it might be your motor control board failing... when it gets hot that's when components on the board start acting up....I mean it could be the radio board but usually that is dead right away. Its not typically something that starts acting up. If it was your odyssey reader encoder that typically will launch the engine like a rocket.

So my professional opinion would be the Motor control board which is part # 691DCDS106

Have you tried it running it conventionally? it should do the same...

Have you lubed it recently? It has some calendar time on it. So, even with minimal run sessions the run time would accumulate.

Did it ever have a battery in it? Remove that and test.

I like BRUK's logic.

Here's the parts page - you can order the part - Lionel has a flat $10 shipping charge. Order other small parts that you may need for any of you Lionel stuff.

Edit: forgot the link - now there
