Looking to add a passenger set to my layout. Can anyone give me some advise on the Lionel Santa Fe Super Chief model. How well does it work and pull. I would like to add one more car and dummy engine for a total of 5 including engines, would this be a problem for this set.

Also looking at a RailKing Santa Fe set for about the same price, but I like the way the Lionel looks

Thanks For any help

Gary

I looked it up, Gary is referring to the Lionel FT diesel set.  Gary, it is a very good running engine, it would be a great addition to your layout.  You can add on cars when you want to including dummy A and B units for the engine.

Nice set.  I've enjoyed it.

I added a B unit, dummy A and several cars over the years.  Enjoy.

I just checked my set number, I have the one from 2002.  Too many trains sitting in boxes!  Sorry.  I'm sure the new set is a great runner also.

I bought the Lionel add-on cars over the years, but also have picked up some MTH RailKing SF cars that nicely match the set.  MTH made a similar SF passenger train to the Lionel set, except it had an F3. Same colors and decorations. MTH made a few SF cars Lionel did not, like a full length vista dome.  It is amazing how close they match.   You can find the MTH SF cars very reasonable on all auction sites.

I think you'll enjoy set 6-30178.  It's an economical way to get a decent passenger train.

The RTR 6-30178 was my "gateway drug" back into Lionel railroading after a lapse of 50 some-odd years.

I purchased one last November, thinking it reminded me of my childhood train, and now 2 1/2 months later, I've given it Electric RR upgrades, started planning a much more complicated layout than anything I had as a kid (computers and the internet certainly have made a difference when living in a rural area when it comes to a hobby like model railroading), and am working my way to a Legacy/LCS system (come on, Lionel - want it, Need It, GOTTA HAVE IT!).

Fun stuff, if I can just control myself...

I have the Lionel Super Chief set but have run the MTH observation/vista dome car with it and they match up rather well.

Got to play with the new set yesterday and yes you can pull a lot. Then while searching ebay found the exact engine that someone else  made into a dummy and bought it. Eventually planning to add 3 more cars for a total of 8 including the engines. The detail is really nice and the cars light up very well. Time to put some people inside and take them around the layout. Thanks for all the help everyone.
