Hello,

This is the first time that I have posted anything on this forum.

My dad has a Lionel #6-18006 Reading T-1 4-8-4 that will not smoke.  Both my dad and I are mechanically inclined but have never really worked on these little trains.  I am looking for ideas on where to start.

Thank you

Michael

The smoke unit is similar to the one in the postwar N&W J. Test for power to the smoke element, and continuity through the element, should have some resistance electrically. If the element has no continuity, it is burnt through someplace, and needs a new resistor, with a wick and some material in the bottom of the smoke unit that will hold fluid, like MTH wick material or Tiki torch material. Also, before taking anything apart, make sure the piston is free and pumps air into the smoke unit. There is no "off" switch, and probably has too much fluid in it. I replaced the element in mine not long ago, so if you need more help LMK.
