My Lionel TMCC Allegheny 6-28028 has started doing a weird intermittent problem with the sounds (chuff, whistle, etc) just dropping out then coming back on while moving. It’s as if I would flip a switch to turn off everything then back on.

And when it comes back on - often almost immediately or usually never more than a few seconds - if I had the volume on my legacy controller at any volume lower or not, it comes back at full volume.

This can happen anywhere on the track at any speed. It does not do it while stopped. It might even not happen for a round or two then do it 2-3 times on one pass.

I’ve adjusted the volume on the tender but that made no difference higher or lower. I’ve checked the entire track and have 18.2 - 18-4 volts everywhere. It just happens randomly and only on my Allegheny; none of my Legacy diesels have this issue

I searched but did not find anything with a similar problem? Any ideas?

The tender is self contained, ie; it gets its own power from the pick up rollers & wheels on the tender. So one of two things, your wheels & rollers can be dirty, as well as your track, or your IR sensor ( the drawbars ) are going in & out of alignment. Another thing is if the little windows on the IR sender/receivers  are covered in dust/ debris as well. …..I’d start easy, clean your tender wheels, clean the pick up rollers, &  lubricate those items. Visually inspect your draw bar connection and make sure the two cubes line up, slightly bend the drawbars if needed to make them line up nice. While you’re there, look at the wiring under the drawbars for any signs of chaffing,……lastly, you can add a standard 9V battery to the tender to help with drop outs,….
