I have 2 of the 6-28540 UP SD40T-2's and I looked up the 6-28256 and it looks the same. I think it would make a good dummy locomotive with road #4596 for you if the price is right. Good luck Gary

Thank You Gary. I did happen to find one for 299.00 plus shipping, I believe it is a little over priced, will resume my search.
Hi oldpirate Greenberg's is saying $390.00 for mint so if it's used you can probably find one cheaper if your not in a hurry to get it. Good luck finding the one you want. Enjoy your layout. Gary
Greenberg's pricing seems out of touch with the realities in the market. Their prices usually run higher than you will find if you just look a little. At least that has been my experience.
Greenberg's 2020 Lionel price guide shows $170 (mint) for the 6-28256. Price guides may not always reflect the current market value, so YMMV. $299 does seem kind of high, though. A recent listing on the big auction site for the 6-28256 and the powered 6-28255 sold for $250.
I have an unpowered UP SD40T-2. It is Lionel #6-38938, engine #2947. This matches the powered unit #6-28540 engine #4004 (2003). The unpowered engine was issued in 2012. Obviously, the two engines were not issued at the same time but they look good together. My dummy was purchased at York for $250. I have to caution that the unpowered units are tough to find and will usually carry a premium price.
I did see the #6-28256 on the auction site for $300. The list price back in 2007 was $170.

Thank You Don,
MTH made a SD45T-2 version tunnel motor. They're a pain to look up because they are incorrectly calling them "SD40T-2".
