This came as a set with track etc maybe 20 years ago , does it only run on DC , is can motor I believe so is it universal and will run on typical Lionel transformer , tested with 9 volt battery and it runs but afraid to put on my AC track

Charlie,

If your trolley is from the set with Lionel Product No. 6-21969 then you'll be fine on AC. It was sold as part of this set, with tracks and a transformer.

There were two different types of transformer but both were AC, as seen in its user's manual (72-1945-250):
