The Lionel team has stated that they have improved the gearbox on the new 2024 run over the 2016 run.
For those with the 2016 run - were you experiencing gearbox issues?
What were the other shortcomings with the 2016 run (if any)?

I don't recall any gearbox issues. I have 1 and it's been fine. Maybe they just improved something in there. No shortcomings I know of. I ordered a new 1 also. Only improvement is Bluetooth & 5 whistles and bells, plus with Bluetooth you can adjust individual volume of horn, bell, crew talk and motor sounds
There were some issues with the gear box. My first one went back to Lionel after less than one month because it would stall and the cab light would blink. It made 3 trips back and forth. Finally someone from Lionel called and asked if it was okay to replace it. The replacement lasted longer but still balks from time to time. A little push at startup will get it running.
The problem seems to be related to gear lash. You can rock the locomotive back and forth 1/4” to 1/2” when it is stopped. I would love to know what they changed and whether we could retrofit that change.
Is this issue present on the original JLC series? Have not heard of this prior to this thread.

I have two JLC GG1's, and I've worked on a bunch of them. I've never seen any gearbox issues with those.
This is probably like the Legacy Mogul, they took a perfectly good gearbox design in the TMCC Mogul and screwed it up for the first Legacy Moguls.

To add to John's input, my sole sample of a JLC GG1 has had no gear box or other issues (including zinc pest). A good piece.
