On a recently arrived F-3 diesel set, one of the shell screw posts was badly cracked and split with 2 pieces falling out. most of us have seen this same problem on any/all of the train brands that are around.

After some puzzling I hit on the repair below. First the two loose parts got glued back to the intact part of the post. Then I wrapped a short piece of .032" hobby wire around twice and twisted the ends with needle nose pliers to make it snug, not real tight, just snug to the post, then cut off the excess. Then all posts got drilled out to 7/64" which is more like the size they should be from the get-go. Yay, the screws are not pipe-wrench tight anymore and it all works fine again.

Another quickie repair for a post that's just split is use the right size heatshrink and shrink it around the post, very quick, doesn't add any bulk, and it plenty strong to keep it together.   If the post is worse off than a simple crack, I slip a short piece of brass tubing over it and slather it with JB-Kwik to make a permanent repair.

I like the heatshrink idea, nice and quick, will have to remember that one. Sadly this post was way beyond that however.
