I wanted to share with you all a project that turned out quite well.
As I am in the process of converting all of my Lionel fleet to scale couplers, it can be a challenge to replace the scale "dummy" coupler on a steam engine pilot supplied by Lionel with a functioning scale coupler.
This project involved a Legacy Lehigh Valley 2-8-0 "Consolidation". I used a Kadee #742 Medium Overset Shank coupler(below) without the gearbox mount. (The original scale coupler is above.)
I cut the back end of the Kadee coupler, filed the stem down and drilled a 1/16" hole in the back.
After filing down the back of the coupler, I filed off a little bit of the bottom support shelf on the pilot so the stem could reach the screw hole.
Upon mounting the new coupler, I discovered a lot of "vertical play" which could cause issues with the alignment of the coupler when in use:
So, I cut a thin piece of plastic and attached in on the top of the stem with super glue:
I then cut the excess plastic to uncover the screw hole:
Now, the coupler stays level and is at the correct height:
