I have this boxcar with 2 small problems.
1— looking at the boxcar door, there is some grayish spotting on the metal ( I assume the door is metal). How can I remove that. Can I brush it off with a Drexel tool?
2— once I operate the car with my RCS track, the plunger stays down, and usually causes a derail or a short of some type a little after the car continues on. I have lubricated the plunger many times. It does not stick. How do I get that plunger to retract?

I meant a Dremel or other multi tool with a wire brush very gently
There is supposed to be a trigger spring in the housing to pull the plunger back up. Is it missing or broke? Part number is 3464-7 Trigger Spring. Jeff at The Train Tender has them.
Here is a parts list if you are missing anything else. Traintender is the way to go, good luck I repaired a few I bought without triggers.
DO NOT use a Dremel or wire brush! You'll take off far more than the spots. Try gentle at first - warm water, a tiny bit of dish soap, and an old tooth brush. Keep the water off the body as a lot of Lionel's white markings run quickly.
