Was running this engine on Thursday and it stopped for no apparent reason, smoke was coming out of everywhere. Was very hot especially on the bottom.  Opened it up and it looks like the reverse board is as done as a Turkey.  I tested the motors with a DC transformer and they function.  There is a lot of small fine wire in these and my guess is something was too close and cooked a fouple of wires.  Can't get any parts for these engines, so I am thinking it is a candidate for ERR Cruise Commander lite.  Any opinions out there on this???

Marty,

A few diodes, resistors, LEDs instead of the bulbs, and you're in business.  I have done this a few times.  You simply tap the LEDs off the motor wires.  Your 4 amp Dallee will handle it with no problems.  My EP-5 still works well, but if it fails some day (and it may be any time if Lionel runs true to form) I'll do the same thing.

Come to think of it, you could still use the bulbs with a couple of diodes, again tapping them off the motor leads.  The sockets will have to be isolated from the frames, though...  Interesting little project!

Did one more upgrade on this engine on Wednesday.  I took out the factory lights, which just sit in a lens housing and installed 3mm warm white LED's from Evans designs,  What a improvement.  Nice and bright now, very eye catching.  One thing that needs to be done is remove the shell mounting bracket and carve a notch in the bottom of it to clear the LED as it sticks out beyond the lens housing, but that only takes a minute...
