my Lionel Crescent Limited Heavyweight 4-pack arrived today. The good news is all the cars have different names from the original 7 that were released back in 2004. It's a very handsome set if I do say so myself.

The major changes include:

New packaging.

Matte black roofs.

New name.

New more detailed trucks.

The observation platform is now a matte gold, opposed to the shiny gold from the previous set.

Green tent windows (WTF Lionel, why?!?)

I just don't know why Lionel made the tint of the windows green! The original set was clear. Once I pair this set with my older set, the new cars are going to stick out like a sore thumb! Luckily I have some clear plastic sheeting so I can redo the windows. As for those matte black roofs, I guess I can just dull coat my older cars.

The new names are:

Sleeper Car- "Stonewall" Jackson

Sleeper Car- P.G.T. Beauregaurd

Observation- R.E. Lee (I believe the original car said Robert E. Lee)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't one of the Southern cars Lionel did the the muted olive green back in 2007 named after Robert E. Lee?

The baggage car is nice, but I wish they had given it a number, instead its just lettered for the United States Mail Railway Post Office. Prototypically this car should be an RPO, not a baggage, but it still looks good.

Appears to be what I'm sure is a substantial upgrade of the older Crescent Limited set I have from some years ago. The Crescent Ltd.consist shown on the high shelf RR in the fuzzy photo below includes two K-Line Baggage cars [cars 1 & 2] and a Coach[car 4].

I computer matched the paint on my Lionel set and painted the center band in the so-called "Sylvan Green" shade and added Gold Trim on the bottom edge of the K-Line cars to match so I could run 10 and 11 car consists in my Limited .

Shelf operation is now dismantled [2/08] and cars are resting--Observation Car of the set currently shown sitting on the Railrax.

Sorry for the 2X posting???

Ben very nice car's, I'm so upset with myself I missed this whole set including the engine. I have several people looking for me right now, but so far no luck. I can get the passenger car's of course, but not the engine. Anyway enjoy your new passenger car's and if you have the engine, I would love to see some photo's of it .

Thanks, Alex

My guess Lionel intended them to be tinted green, why, I don't know. I don't have the newest Lionel Ps-4, mainly because I hate the green roof it has. But I have 4 of the 2007 version and 1 of the 2004 version. Beautiful engines. Might have to go for one of MTH's Queen & Crescent Limited when they come out.

Alex, the steam locomotive #6-11334 is still available on Lionel's web store, but it's currently MSRP.  Toward the end of last year though, it was on sale for 20% off, which was a good deal -- although a hefty shipping charge and sales tax brought the final price to just a shade under the price tag of the big dealers (when they had them).

David

I'm going to try and super detail these cars.

Changes shall include:

1.Adding clear windows glazing.

2.Swapping out Lionel's underbody details for ones made my Golden Gate Depot.

3.Add end of car detail parts (brake wheels, grab bars, scale diaphragms, and anti-raddle bars) from Precision Scale Co.

4.And a lot of work needs to be done to that rear platform. A real fabric awning is a must!

Lionel has been doing that on several of their premium passenger sets in recent years -- both heavyweight and aluminum.  It's not a new thing... I have a nice set of 15" aluminum cars with detailed interiors in the Burlington/California Zephyr livery produced in the mid-2000's that has the green tint windows as well.

Hi David thanks very much for the info, yes 20 % off is a nice deal but at full retail that's to much. So I'll keep looking.

Thanks again, Alex

Thanks for posting the pics, Ben.  I was wondering when these would appear in the forum.  Mine are on their way and I should have them soon.  I can't wait to pair them up with the loco and tender.  I hope Lionel offers a stationsounds diner and addtional add-on passenger cars this year.  I kind of wish I bought the Blue Comet as well.  But, I think I'll pass and wait for future Vision Line steam engine offerings at some point.

It is a handsome set and you are lucky to have 11 now.  The whole train must look fantastic.

The Blue Comet set also came with green tinted windows.  I posted concerns about this:

And then a week later pictures of my replacing them with clear windows, with shades.

Other than that, I like them alot.

They look superb - I'm definitely getting them ASAP to match the locomotive. The windows don't really bug me, I think it looks unique. If this is the case for the Alton set, too, it could make a nice Christmas look....

Mikado 4501,

All of the latest heavyweight sets have the tinted green windows, including the Alton set.  The slash of price of the Chicago & Alton loco ($649 - $699) that some hobby shops seem to be offering recently makes that set very tempting too.
