My Lionel Lionmaster PRR T1 that came out a couple of years ago lost the chuff from the main stack. The whistle still work, but the main stack just has small stream of smoke coming out like it does when standing still. Is there anything I can check? I did a reset didn't help

Now the loco will not move until speed step 9 and when reducing speed stops at speed step 5. Sometimes the front motor will start to spin before the rear motor with the reader on it. It did work until after I took it apart to check the above mentioned smoke unit problems. Any ideas or just get it serviced?
Thanks
Todd

The smoke unit fan quit working in my scale berk. If your comfortable opening your loco up,I rmoved the cover from the smoke unit, pulled off the impeller and put a couple of drops of labelle oil on the motor shaft bushing. I replaced the impeller and gave it a few spins with my finger to work the oil in, reassembled the loco and its been fine ever since. Iv'e had to lube every smoke unit fan on every steamer I own no matter the brand at some point or another, typically they just get noisey but my berk fan stopped altogether. Either way once I lubed the bushing I've never had another propblem.

Oil did not work now new problem.

New problem

Check to see if the flywheel with the reader on it is loose and spins on the shaft. If so these can be tighten with either a tiny allen key or a small flathead screwdriver like one from an eyeglass kit depending on the type of fastener used. Make sure all of the "mini plugs" are fully seated in the boards, you may have pulled something loose during disassembly.

There is a phillips screw centrally located under the bottom of each set of drivers, this is the motormount screw, check that its tight. These were notorious for coming loose on earlier lionmaster articulateds.

Great minds think alike?

I just bought a Lionmaster T-1 NIB from a TCA member and the chuff would drop out sporadically so I dropped the truck and the center wire to the cherry switch was broken. I resoldered that and it worked for a while but then it stopped working again. This time the little orange disc (I know it is an electronic component of some sort) came unsoldered so I resoldered it but now I have no chuff. Do you think I need a new cherry switch or should I send it back to Lionel?

When you say 'lost its chuff", do you mean the smoke stops puffing or the actual "chuff" sound drops out?

If your losing just the smoke puff, its likely a smoke unit fan issue. If your losing just the chuff sound its likely something electronic, possibly even as simple as dirty track, wheels, or rollers.

If your losing the smoke puff and the chuff sound its likely an issue with the cherry switch, some have had luck adjusting the arm on the switch to get it to work.

Having said that, if it is the switch, at this point since you've already been repairing it it may be easier just to order a replacement from Lionel.

The cherry switch for that loco is only $1.50 from Lionel aside from the lousy $9.00 flat rate shipping, still cheaper than sending it to Lionel not to mention the repair charge.

I really have no help to offer, and I certainly sympathize with your loco giving

you problems (been there - today!), but if it's any consolation (and I'm sure that its not), when you mentioned one "engine" (set of drivers) spinning/moving before the other set,

I felt moved to remind all that the real PRR T1 Duplex was famous for being slippery

and having one set of drivers slipping while the other was not. So...it's acting

prototypically...

I know - doesn't help. But all things can be fixed, though a hospital stay may be called for.
