It is time again for the annual Memphis Pink Palace Museum Model Train Exhibit

Yesterday the Casey Jones High Railers and the Memphis HO Modular Group loaded out our modular layouts and moved into the Memphis Pink Palace Museum for our annual October show. This year the exhibit will run from Saturday September 28th, through Friday October 26th.

The Load out started at 9am with both groups moving out at the same time. I thought it would be a cluster, but I was wrong. Her are a few pictures.

Moving In

The Pink Palace has a massive freight elevator alowing both groups to move in at the same time.

With floats for moving modules at a premium, the Casey Jones guy commandeered a museum exhibit, an original IC RR baggage cart from the old IC Central station in Memphis.

We started loading at 9am, we were set up by 1:30, just in time for some of our members to get home in time to see Tennessee get beat by Florida.

We will finish up scenery this week and start running trains for the public Saturday September 28th. We hope OGR Forum members in the Mid South will come by and see us.

Have a good week.

Popsrr,

The show will start this Saturday and run through Octber 25th. The Pink Palace is open form 9am until 5pm Monday through Saturday and 12 to 5pm on Sunday. I hope you can come down and see us. I will be there on the weekends through October 13th. It looks like I will be able to go to York, so I will miss the last weekend of the show.

Train Collector,

There is an HO, N and our O layout. Yes, we really draw the kids. Here is a picture or two from past Pink Palace exhibit  back in 2011

If you live in the Mid South area please try and come by the Pink Palace and see our exhibit. There is also a great HO layout and N scale layout in the exhibit.   I hope some OGR Forum folks can come and see us.

Richard thanks for the reply. I spent a few years at NAS Memphis so I do know that area also.

I also see that Sears is pulling out of Hickory Hill Mall. That Tornodo sure has had a delayed effect on that mall.

I spent 8 years passing in front of the PP their on Central going down to Parkway for school their at the corner of Central and East Parkway( CBHS/CBC)

Popsrr,

I have spent a lot of time in Millington and the NAS. My unit in the USAR was stationed there during my last few years before I retired. The wife and I still use the PX, Commissary, and of course the Class VI store.

Sadly the Memphis you knew is slowly but surely disappearing. The Fairgrounds are gone, our parks have lost their names, the Coliseum is empty, and we could not even find a way to keep the Memphis Belle. I will not start talking about the mess at the Pyramid.

The Hickory Ridge Mall was on live support when the tornado struck. Dillards had already left, there were more empty stores then occupied, and after the tornado Masey"s (Goldsmith's) had a good excuse to move out due to the damage, and they did just that.

We are down to 3 Sears Stores now in this area. Wolf Chase, Poplar Plaza, and some how the Southland Mall store is still hanging on.

Our office was in Hickory Hill. We moved out of the area back in 2009, it just was not safe to be there anymore.

Enough politics.

I will be heading to thePink Palace in a few minutes. I hope to post pictures this afternoon.

Richard

Richard looking forward to your pictures of the run at the PP.

I know a lot has changed there. Its been about 5 years since I was there. I was wondering if the Train store out east off the expressway was still open. Not the one off White Station Road but further east with a large inventory? I did go in the one in Colliverville that had a bike shop in the front but they had a small inventory.

I have a friend out east North of I-40 at about the 20 oe 22 mile marker(out ypur way) but still North of the Austin Pea Hwy a bit.

Hope you get a lot of people to attend the PP today.

Popsrr,

Model Railroad and Hobby shop closed the Sycamore View location a few years after Dick Wolfe passed away. His son Richie moved the shop to a smaller building on Poplar just east of Perkins. He did not make it and closed all together last year. The hobby shop off of White Station (Mid South Hobbies and Games) moved to a larger space in the same complex and is now trying to step up and take the place of Model Railroad and Hobby Shop. Emmo has hired one of Dick Wolfe's employees. The inventory is improving, but still mostly used stock.

The shop in Collierville has closed.

If you want a new train down here you have to look in the ads in OGR and get on the phone or internet.

I will be posting pictures of the Pink Palace show in a moment.

Too bad you lost the old Dick Wolfe store. That location east of Perkins on Poplar if on the south side was in about where the old Big Star store was long ago. If they were over on the North side that also is a small strip mall. Too bad they did not make it.

My choice for favorite location is North side of Poplar just west of Sears and it is called Denstools. Love their products mmmmmmm good
