I suppose the prototype's engineers complained about the blow-back through the firebox and the steam, if any, blowing out of the stack? Saw this one on that auction site....old repair maybe.

I don't know about that, but its old, doesn't have cruise and the stack is in the wrong spot, so they should just throw it away now before it wrecks a young mind
Yep, not quite a return-flue boiler methinks. Seller says it's an Issmayer. It seems to be suffering from the same ailment that causes the endless photos of tenders bass-ackwards to their locomotives.
It's probably a real steamer. The dome in the normal stack position looks like the boiler fill point. I have one of my grandfather's home made stationary boilers and the port you fill the boiler with looks just like that.

I think it is too. I saw one much like it recently.
If the same, it would be an inside frame cylinder powering the large front drivers.
